The last Comic Strip of the Week we ran as many strips as weeks in an entire month, and it made me so tired, I had to take a month off. But we are back! This month is "Scary Scarlet" and every week, we'll spotlight a time when Scarlet was mistaken for a ghost! Sometimes it was on purpose, such as the first time it occurred in 1941. Scarlet was writing a newspaper column giving "Advice to the Lovelorn." In October of that year, she came to the aid of a husband wanting to get rid of his mother-in-law, not by killing her but by scaring her.

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con 2010

Last weekend, I travelled to Rosemont, IL for the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con and had a blast! It is nice to know that folks in Scarlet's hometown still remember her. In addition to the many media guests, there were also a good amount of comic-related exhibitors and artists in attendance, including Dan Parent. Dan's been drawing Archie Comics for nearly his entire career as an artist and he's always been high on my list to see his vision of Scarlet. I'm pleased to say that it is even better than I'd imagined!

Comic Strip of the Week - Peppy

In our last "Dog Days of Summer," we spotlight Peppy, who Scarlet must protect from the cantankerous Mrs. Cranks as well as a couple of crooks! Stamm also uses this arc to promote the use of dogs during the war. Canines have always had an active role in our military. There are currently two War Dog Memorial statues in the U.S. (March Field Air Museum in Riverside, California and Sacrifice Field in Fort Benning, Georgia) and there is even a proposal for a National War Dog monument in Washington, DC. We think Scarlet would agree that our fine four-legged friends should be honored!

I particularly love how Stamm features the pooch in the last panel confirming that Ambrose is no longer a threat. Good dog!

One of her earliest adventures involved her befriending a blind boy named Mike and getting him a guide dog. It is the best day of the boy's life, but the danger is not over. Fortunately, Mike and Captain have Scarlet looking out for them!

At this time she hadn't used her powers of invisibility in years and her own future was not fortunate. Only a few months later, she did not appear in the strip and it was renamed "Stainless Steel: Public Hero No. 1."

This week's Sunday strip from 1946 features Russell Stamm having fun with the 1880's story The Prince and the Pauper and is very similar to the 1980's comedy Trading Places. Two overly wealthy financiers, Mr. Lovcash and Mr. Smelbucks, wager on what is the secret of success - luck or skill - as Lovcash switches places with the owner of a vegetable cart. As Mark Twain, Eddie Murphy, and Dan Aykroyd all conceded, it is a recipe for wackiness!

10 Other Scarlet Characters

This week saw the release of the first issue for a new comic book series titled Scarlet. She is definitely not to be confused with our girl! Just for the fun of it, we present some other popular characters through the years who have shared the name "Scarlet" (give or take a "t" or two).

Scarlet is a new creator-owned series by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. In a recent interview with CBR, Bendis explained, "The book itself is about this woman Scarlet. She lives in Portland and she's a young woman whose life is literally destroyed by a insanely corrupted police force... She fights back against the corrupt cops and her push back starts almost a shoving war of wills between herself and almost all facets of the government that she's pushing back against. Every time she pushes back, someone bigger comes after her. That builds till it literally starts an American revolution."

Scarlett O'Hara is probably the most famous character on this list. She was created by Margaret Mitchell and made her debut in the 1936 novel, Gone with the Wind. There have been many other books, plays and movies made about her and even a film made about the casting of the character, but the definitive face of Miss Scarlet will always be that of Vivien Leigh from the 1939 blockbuster.

Agent Scarlett is one of the original members of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon and toy line. She has also appeared in the live action movie (played by Rachel Nichols) and comic book series (above art by Phil Noto) . Scarlett is the first female member of the G.I. Joe team to be given an action figure in 1982. Her full name is Shana M. O'Hara and she was born in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Scarlet Witch is arguably the most popular superhero on this list, though there have been times when she was more villain than hero. The character first appeared in X-Men #4 (March 1964) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, but she is more notably associated with the Avengers (above art by George Perez). Her real name is Wanda Maximoff and she is the daughter of Magneto. Her mutant power is the ability to tap into mystic energy for reality-altering effects via "hexes." The Scarlet Witch can be presently be seen in the Marvel mini-series, Avengers: The Children's Crusade, the first issue of which also went on sale last week.

Will Scarlet is the oldest character on this list as one of Robin Hood's "Merry Men" from ballads originating in the early 1500's. He has been portrayed by numerous actors over the years (even by the Klingon Worf in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode), but has seldom had the spotlight to himself, one exception being a recent novel by Stephen R. Lawhead. It is also believed that the character is the inspiration for Green Arrow's sidekick, Speedy.

The Scarlet Pimpernel was the fictional leader of a league of English aristocrats who took it upon themselves to rescue innocent victims during the French Revolution. Created by Baroness Emmuska Orczy in 1903, the character is one of the first "disguised superheroes" in fiction and has been the subject of perhaps more novels, plays, films, and satires than all the other characters on this list combined.

Captain Scarlet was the main character of a British "Supermarionation" series in the late 1960's. The character is actually a virtually indestructible, "retro-metabolized" reconstruction engineered by the alien Mysterons, who becomes an agent of Spectrum and defends humanity against the race that created him. Though the series only lasted one season, there have been numerous books, comics, and a later series that aired in 2005, Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet.

Scarlett was a short-lived series from DC Comics about a cheerleader who discovered her parents murdered by vampires and becomes the "scarlet redeemer". Not sure if it was inspired by the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer and DC decided to hide the character once the tv series became popular for fear of lawsuit, but I am surprised she's never been used since 1994.

Scarlet Veronica is another cheerleader fighting the forces of darkness. Only she's dead. Or rather undead. Horror has a hero! An independent comic series created by Jason Moody, Josh Ruggles, and Justin Greathouse in 2008, copies of the first mini-series are still available online.

Miss Scarlet was one of the original suspects of murder in the board game, Clue and since the game was first published in 1949, whoever chooses her moves first. Her look has changed over the years, though she always remains one of the mainly accused due to her youth, cunning, and attractiveness. In 1940, Russ Stamm celebrated the 4th of July with a boom! In the last panel of this strip, a plane crashes into a daycare center, beginning one of my personal favorite Scarlet story lines ever. The only time it has been republished in the last 50 years is in The Untold Origins of the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil, though you can see a big portion of the story on the official Scarlet website.

Summer is here and it is definitely pool season! I recently acquired some daily strips from 1947 featuring a storyline centered around the mild mannered Afly Speck, who is so desperate for a girl's attention, he decides to jump off the high dive at an amusement park. Scarlet tries to help the sad sack, but she only manages to get wet for her troubles. As hot as it has been here recently, when I read this strip, my main thought was, "That looks refreshing!"

Last week's comic strip featured one of many encounters Scarlet had with children. Some, such as Beansie, were mischievous and need to be taught a lesson. Others were poor and in need of help. However, one of her most popular featured a young boy named Hobble-De-Hoy. It is even documented in Crawford's Encyclopedia of Comic Books by Hubert H. Crawford.

"Perhaps the strangest episode - and one that rates as a Golden Age classic in creative fantasy - occurred when Scarlet discovered her invisible power was contagious. It began with a casual stroll down the street during an invisible state when a youth, coming the opposite direction, bumped into her and knocked himself silly. Thrown to the ground, the dumbfounded lad scratched his head and tried to figure out what had happened. As a gesture of apology, Scarlet kissed the boy on the cheek. Result: the boy became invisible!"

Yesterday, after 86 years in newspapers around the globe, the last Little Orphan Annie comic strip was published. You can see the final strip at GoComics.com. There are plenty of online articles detailing the importance of Annie in American comics, and I do recommend in particular Phil Rosenthal's column in the Chicago Tribune. Although she was published in the crosstown rival newspaper, we salute Annie's incredible run and humbly offer this week's strip featuring Scarlet's encounter with an orphan not nearly as nice, Beansie. Leaping Lizards Scarlet, be careful playing cupid! You don't have a trusty dog like Sandy to save you!

HeroesCon 2010

No comic strip this week, as I've been recovering from the awesome craziness that was HeroesCon! It is easily my favorite convention of the year and I strongly suggest placing it on your schedule for 2011. I did not have a booth (maybe next year), but spent the weekend visiting with various fans and pros and the subject of Invisible Scarlet came up quite a bit. I think there's some real interest in this character not only from the folks who remember her, but by those just learning about her as well. I would like to thank Shelton Drum, the hard working con staff, and all the guests and attendees for a wonderful weekend!

Of course, I did not come home empty handed! I always try to get at least one sketch of Scarlet at each convention I attend. The piece below is by Stephanie Gladden, artist with many years of experience drawing licensed characters (Looney Tunes, Ren & Stimpy, Wolf & Red, The Simpsons, Powerpuff Girls, and many Cartoon Network characters). Creator Russ Stamm had great admiration for our servicemen and drew this Sunday strip honoring the military about a year before he himself was drafted. During his service and years after, he helped promote the war bond program and always encouraged saying a prayer for "our boys" - a prayer of thanks.

In Memoriam Frank Frazetta 1928 - 2010

Today marked the passing of a true legendary talent, Frank Frazetta. An illustrator extraordinaire who made an impact on nearly every aspect of media - comics, novels, magazines, movies, television, and fine art. His style was both unmistakable and unforgettable.

One of his first projects of recognition was a series of Buck Rogers covers he did for the later issues of Famous Funnies comics. The Buck Rogers strip reprints began in issues of Famous Funnies beginning with issue #3 until the end of the comic magazine with issue #218 in 1953 (Scarlet's run was from issue #81 to #167). Frazetta's covers are featured on issues #209 - 215 and it is difficult to believe that they were not enough to keep Famous Funnies from being cancelled. A while back, we featured one of his robots, Two Ton Tin and this week we spotlight his first robot, Clinkety Clank, which appeared to be a failed experiment until Scarlet found herself trapped inside the metal frame. Comic Strip of the Week - First Saturday in May

This weekend is the first Saturday in May which means the Kentucky Derby - the first event in horse racing's Triple Crown season. The sport was at its height during Scarlet's day and as this reprint in Famous Funnies #141 shows, Scarlet herself took part in a horse race, much to the dismay of the horse!

More recently, the first Saturday in May is also a day that friends of Scarlet can appreciate - it is Free Comic Book Day! This week's strip comes from the latest batch of dailies we have added to our collection. From a story arc in late 1947 as Scarlet was trying to help Mr. Afly Speck win the heart of a weightlifting woman. He tries to impress her by leaping off the high dive board and Scarlet also takes the plunge! It has been difficult to track down all of Scarlet's strips. Very few of the originals exist. We have mainly depended on personal collections and library newspaper archives, but we keep going, until we have the entire run!

The last entry into our Final Four of Scarlet's craziest villains is also our first femme fatale. In the last Sunday story arc of 1951, Russell Stamm never tells us the name of this fiery-tempered redhead, but that just adds to her disturbing nature. Talk about a bad date! Stan Tucker goes out on the town with this looker and decides to let her have the wheel. Bad move Stan. She mows down a pedestrian and totals the car. During the accident, her head lands on a doll which saves her from injury. She and her "lucky charm" run from the scene and poor Stan is wanted for murder. He hires Scarlet to prove his innocence and the story takes some odd twists and turns and does not end well for anyone involved.

Comic Strip of the Week - March Madness Week 3

This week's villain is so crazy mad, he does not even have a name. However he was popular enough that his story arc was reprinted at least twice. The comic strips in January 1947 introduced readers to the strange Professor Fychfud, who Scarlet suspected was feeding people to his exotic collection of fish. However, the real threat was this little monster who came closer than anyone to feeding Scarlet and her colleague Sandy to the fishes! The story was reprinted in Harvey's Black Cat comics #15 & 16 in 1949 and then again in Harvey Comics Hits #59 - Tales of the Invisible in 1951. The pages below were scanned from the latter.

In the second week of spotlighting some of the craziest criminals to face off against the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil we present one of the most gruesome, Ambrose Rhone. Throughout the run of the strip, the tone was usually light and comical even when Scarlet was being threatened by Nazis. Not so in June of 1945. Enter a brute named Ambrose, a psychotic killer who has dismembered his wife, torments his mother-in-law, and abuses the family pooch. Never was Stamm’s art style so stark and nightmarish as Scarlet tries to aid the helpless old woman. It is disturbing tale with a bleak resolution.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day, here is a Sunday strip from March 1945 in which Scarlet has a dream. It is a weird dream in which she visits the moon and encounters dictators serving penance. While MLK's dream was to be "free at last," in this strip Scarlet reminds us that the alternative comes at a "horrible price."

Scarlet was a fairly self-reliable character. Unlike most female characters who found themselves in peril, she seldom needed to depend on a man for rescue. Though she did get help from other sources. In this early strip from August 1940, Scarlet (a Chicago native) receives aid from a billy goat. It is not known if it is this same goat who would go on to curse the Chicago Cubs organization five years later.

Happy 2010! Though it appears this blog has not been updated in a while, the entries have been posted quite regularly, they've just been invisible! It is now time to return to view better than ever. This year will be a big one for Scarlet and the fun starts right now. I've done away with the weekly panel and will now be posting an entire comic strip each and every week! The strip above is from December 31, 1944. Even running late for a party, Scarlet cannot resist helping someone in need.

Panel of the Week - Train Kept A-Rollin'

In May of 1946, Scarlet found herself tangled up in an intense love triangle that resulted in her wrecking not one, but two weddings. She then decides she needs to get away from the Windy City for a while, but finds herself without a train ticket. So she puts her talents to use and hitches a ride. This panel shows Scarlet at one of her most vulnerable times in her history - literally and figuratively wrapped in a whirlwind, but still hanging on. Little does she know that this will lead her to the "unconquered wilderness" of the Okefenokee Swamp to have one of her weirdest adventures yet...

Panel of the Week - Cover Girl

This week's panel differs from the norm in two ways. 1) It is not actually a panel from a strip, but the cover art used for Harvey's Invisible Scarlet O'Neil #2 published in 1950. 2) The art is very similar to that of creator Russ Stamm, but is most likely the work of Al Alvison who produced a lot of covers for Harvey Comics during this time.

I recently discovered the original artwork on eBay and though I could not afford to bid, I was happy to see this rare look behind the scenes of one of Scarlet's comic covers. The scene depicted is from one of the most popular story arcs originally drawn by Stamm in a series of Sunday strips from the late 40's in which Scarlet finds herself in the Stone Age and must face "The Fight for Survival." The story is reprinted almost in its entirety in Scarlet's second issue for Harvey Comics.

The cover art is not an exact reproduction of any of Stamm's original panels, but it does nicely convey the same tone, atmosphere and story elements of the arc. Which was standard work from Al Avison, a solid penciller and inker during the Gold and Silver Ages of comics. According to information from the Lewis Wayne Gallery:

AL AVISON (b. 1920) worked extensively for Timely Comics, co-creating the speed-powered hero The Whizzer. He and Syd Shores succeeded the Simon/Kirby team on Captain America and he also drew The Vision, Young Allies, and Blonde Phantom among others. He spent a year at Fawcett drawing Captain Marvel, and in later years did a lot of work for Harvey, working in many different genres.

This is the original cover art for Invisible Scarlet O'Neil #2, published by Harvey in 1950. Although "signed" (photostat) by ISO'N creator Russel Stamm, this is almost certainly the work of Avison, who has written his name on the back of the art, as he often did.

Panel of the Week - Scarlet's First Love

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, this week's panel shows off Scarlet's first love interest introduced in the comic strips. "Red" Penn was a tramp turned successful radio crooner thanks to some help from an invisible source. It was in February sixty-eight years ago that Red finally had the courage (and the funds) to ask Scarlet out, and creator Russell Stamm was all too happy to provide them with the "Perfect Date."

Despite the wonderful evening, Red and Scarlet's relationship did not last. There was the standard soap opera melodrama to be sure, but there was also a war going on and Red became a naval aviator. The last strip that I've seen features Red called back to the air corps and promising to marry Scarlet when he returned. It appears he never did.

In honor of Red and first loves everywhere, take some time to celebrate your loved ones this Valentine's Day!

Panel of the Week - Scarlet's Last Panel

The 1950's were not kind to Scarlet. Super-powered female characters were fading from the comic pages. In order to save his signature character, creator Russ Stamm dropped the "Invisible" from the title and focused on dramatic soap opera stories as opposed to those of intrigue, mystery, and adventure. One of the supporting characters, "Stainless Steel" grew in popularity and by 1954, he became the title character of the strip. After 13 years, Scarlet was driven out of her strip with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever. This week's panel from July 6, 1954 is the very last one to feature her that we have been able to find. It is the final known image of Scarlet by Russ Stamm (or anyone else for that matter) that was ever created.

I'm pleased to report that there are more new panels featuring Scarlet on the way! I've had the good fortune to have seen some the work being done on the new graphic novel and I can't wait to share. Scarlet may have ended her comic career badly in the last century, but we'll make sure she is treated well in this one!

Panel of the Week - The Scarlet Bowl

More than 25 years before the first Super Bowl was played, our gal Scarlet found herself penalized for illegal interference in a very painful way! Her motivation was just however, as a group of thugs had decided to use some unfair tactics against their opponents in order to win some charity prize money. As always, Scarlet took her lumps but got the job done. With only the noblest of intentions, Scarlet "participated" in nearly every popular male sport of the times - baseball, football, boxing, and even horse racing. She may not have been built like an athlete, but she gave 110% every time she stepped out on the field. Even though no one ever saw her play, she's still our MVP!

Panel of the Week - Scarlet Meets the President

This week Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States of America. According to many reports, he is a fan of comics, particularly Spider-Man and last week Marvel released a comic book featuring Obama and Spidey to great success. It is hardly the first time a comic character has encountered an actual Commander-in-Chief. In May of 1941, our own Scarlet O'Neil was away from the Windy City and while visiting the nation's capitol, she decided to sneak a peak in the White House. She did not reveal herself to President Harry S. Truman, but simply observed as he worked in the Oval Office.

Scarlet was impressed with what she saw, "This is a great honor - to be able to watch the President at work. I must be careful not to disturb him. Upon his shoulders rests the gravest responsibilities. This office has been occupied by some of our greatest men. And who knows? Perhaps you or your son or grandson may someday occupy this office too. For this is America."

"Being in the President's office has inspired every ounce of patriotic blood I have in me. The American flag stands for freedom. It must wave forever...and I'm going to help see that it is or I'm not Invisible Scarlet O'Neil."

As we usher in our new President, we are faced with challenges not unlike those in the days of Harry S. Truman. And just as Scarlet vowed nearly 68 years ago, we will all need to do our part to keep the American flag waving with honor and pride.

Panel of the Week - True Colors

Now that I've got your attention...! It may come as no surprise to many of you (especially if you've been reading this blog) that the Sunday strips of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil were reprinted in issues of Famous Funnies magazine. But what you may not know is that the panels were re-colored. I have a few theories on why this happened, though I have not been able to confirm any definitive reason. The most likely explanation is that it was cheaper to print comic books in the four basic colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and it was likely newspapers - then the most popular form of media - had a wider palette. You can easily see the evidence for yourself. The panel above was taken from an actual Sunday page from February 1946, while the one below was published in the September Famous Funnies issue later than year.

Wizard World Chicago Report

Hope everyone reading this had an enjoyable 4th of July weekend! I used the time to catch up on some much needed rest as I did two cons in two weeks - Heroes Con in Charlotte followed by Wizard World Chicago. Heroes is my favorite shows of the year. The whole hall is one giant Artists Alley! We did not have a booth, but still managed to spread the word about Scarlet.

Wizard World Chicago was a different story! Not only was it a convention I had never been to before, but it is held in Scarlet's place of origin. In many ways, it was Scarlet's homecoming! This was the first time the character had been promoted in the area in over 50 years! It was great to see how many folks at the con remembered the strip. We even met one fellow whose mother loved the comic so much, she named her son after the creator!

Once again, we found ourselves sharing a booth with Terence Bernard, still promoting Sophia:Awakening (why have many of you NOT bought the first issues yet?). This time he was with his lovely wife and they skipped out one afternoon to enjoy the Taste of Chicago festival also happening that weekend. Too bad they didn't bring any food back for us! Also in the booth was James Watson, who was promoting Atlantis Studios and his own character, Paula Peril. Between Scarlet, Sophia, and Paula, we had plenty of eye candy on our table! Russ Stamm Jr. was also in the booth, at least when he wasn't on the floor taking care of some Scarlet business! There are some AWESOME things in the works for Scarlet and if even half of them come to fruition, it'll be exciting time to be a Scarlet fan!

The weekend also saw the debut of the CBT (Comic Book Trailer) for "The Untold Origins of Scarlet O'Neil." The video promo can currently be seen at ComicBookTrailers.com and should be available soon at other video sites.

The best part of the convention was talking to friends and fans of Scarlet throughout the entire weekend. Writer Chuck Dixon revealed that he was a fan of the original strip. We had an insightful discussion with Charles Pelto of Chicago-based Classics Comics Press about reprinting the original strips in new volumes. If you haven't already see them, I strongly encourage any fan of Scarlet to check out the beautiful compilations he has created for Leonard Starr's "Mary Perkins on Stage" strips. And last, but certainly not least, we got a Scarlet sketch from Rebecca Whitaker. I've been a fan of her work and her blog, No Smoking in the Skull Cave for a while and hopefully she's now a fan of Scarlet's as well. We think she perfectly captured the fun side of Scarlet!

All told, we had a GREAT time at Wizard World Chicago and we will definitely be back next year!

Scarlet Returns to Chicago Today!

CHICAGO, IL – In 1955, the last comic strip of Invisible Scarlet O’Neil was published by the Chicago Sun-Times. Now, 53 years later, the character returns to the Windy City to celebrate her re-birth as a comic book icon at the Wizard World Chicago comic convention held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center June 26 - 29.

Invisible Scarlet O’Neil has been referred to as comics’ “First Leading Lady with Superpowers”. Scarlet was the creation of Russell Stamm, who had been an assistant to such giants in the field as Sidney Smith (The Gumps) and Chester Gould (Dick Tracy). In addition to the newspaper strips, she also appeared in Famous Funnies magazine and had her own short comic book series in the early 1950’s. The strip ran for fifteen years before ending in 1955, and the character was not seen again.

Starting in 2007, Russell Stamm Jr. determined to bring his father’s character back into view and wrote a modern version of Scarlet which is currently in production by Atlantis Studios for release in Fall 2008. Artist, writer, and comics historian Trina Robbins has consulted on Scarlet’s new look, in a graphic-novel length action-adventure designed appeal to fans of the original strip and modern readers.

Scarlet O’Neil will be visible again at Atlantis Studios booth #943. Russ Stamm, Jr. will be available to discuss both old and new versions of his father’s creation. Also scheduled is Michael A. Gordon, writer of “The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O’Neil,” a comic-sized history of the character and the creator.

Atlantis Studios will be performing portfolio reviews of artists interested in illustrating future Scarlet projects. A brand-new comic book trailer will premiere, and through the magic of digital technology you will be able to get your picture taken with Invisible Scarlet herself!

Panel of the Week - Scarlet Goes Ape!

Apes and comics go together like damsels and distress, and this panel from 1941 is an example of both. Scarlet's sudden encounter with "Ping Bong" was obviously inspired by the 1933 film King Kong, but gorillas would always be a popular attraction to lure readers. In an interview with DC executive Irwin Donenfeld in Comic Book Artist # 5, he was of the firm belief that by "placing a gorilla on a comic book cover, regardless of the context or relevance, would automatically correspond with an increase in sales for that title." Thus, Stamm's aggressive ape was just one of the first in a long line of comic book primate characters - Beppo, BrainiApe, the Gibbon, Gleek, Gorilla Man, Grease Monkey, Sam Simeon, Konga, Mojo Jojo, Sky Ape, and Titano to name but a few. Sad News - Chester Gould Museum Closed

We are very sad to learn that the Chester Gould-Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, IL closed its doors on June 1st.

E&P reported that the 1991-founded museum shut down for economic reasons.

The museum's collection included original Dick Tracy comics by Gould, some of which probably featured assistant work by the creator of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil. Russell Stamm was an assistant to Gould from 1935 to 1940. Even after he left to create his own character, the two remained friends and Gould was very supportive even though the two were working for rival Chicago newspapers.

Some items from the Chester Gould collection will continue to be displayed in Woodstock, and a virtual museum is still online at ChesterGould.org.

At least she does not have to worry about sunburn - one flick of the wrist and the rays pass right through her!

Panel of the Week - The Perfect Plan

This week's panel is from September 26, 1946 and illustrates a plan to murder cartoonist Stussell Ramm, the creator of the popular comic character "Crimson O'Dare." The girlfriend of Ramm's assistant means to do away with him using the device above. "The end of the trigger passes through a hole made by shooting pane with BB shot. Closing the window pulls the string and the gun is fired. The blast parts string passing over end of barrel and shatters window. All attachments being freed, the entire mechanism is pulled aloft by the balloon which is carried out over Lake Michigan by the south wind...and rises until it bursts. Of course the sawed-off shotgun is a deadly weapon and kills the person who shut the window. Stussell's shot gun which was fired the night before will be left on the fire escape to mislead police." Sounds like Eve thought of everything... everything except being caught by an invisible gal!

NYCC 2008

I think I've finally started to recover from this year's NYCC! The Big Apple really knows how to show someone a good time! This year's NYCC was fantastic and I had a great time promoting The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil. I'm very proud to say we sold a fair number of books and gave away all our promo cards. I also spoke with a number of folks who stopped by and couldn't take their eyes off the cover image of Russell Stamm's signature character! Many fanboys love to challenge the idea that Scarlet is the first leading lady with superpowers to appear in comic form, so it makes for some interesting discussions. I'm just so glad to see the character getting attention and there is some great news to come!

However, I was not alone in the booth! Others included a couple of "old friends" - Kathy Messick who is still hard at work promoting Cyber Angels. A great concept and I am amazed that some company hasn't signed her to develop it as a series yet. Also in attendance was Scott Ham of Buckeye Comics, creator of Blood Sentence. Scott's got some great ideas for other horror titles and I'm looking forward to his next project which takes place in the Old West and WWII.

This year we also had a newbie in the booth, Terrance Bernard who was there to introduce the world to Sophia: Awakening and 8-part comic series that takes place in the distant future. The preview book and promo cards and posters did attract quite a lot of attention, thanks in no small part to the gorgeous artwork by Andres Guinaldo! I strongly recommend checking out a preview of the first issue at Parasite Publishing.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Rafeal Navarro, the artist who sent us a very nice image of Scarlet to our MySpace page. I gave him a copy of "Untold Origins" for his effort and he honored us with another beautiful Scarlet sketch:

Panel of the Week - New York State of Mind

On August 25, 1941, Scarlet took her first trip to New York City, and it was indeed full of excitement and thrills! This weekend, the thrill is back as she returns to the Big Apple to attend the New York Comic Con at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan April 18-20. Michael Gordon, the writer of The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil will be appearing at the Atlantis Studios booth throughout the weekend. Stop by and say "Hi" and chat about Scarlet stories both new and old. And if you don't already have a copy of the Untold Origins book, he'll have plenty on hand!

Panel of the Week - Me & My Shadow

In this panel from December 1941, Scarlet proves she's not afraid of her Shadow! Actually, her foe in this arc is a disguised criminal trying to take over an invisible ink factory. Russell Stamm frequently used pop culture references in the Scarlet strips and I'm sure his readers were all to familiar with this pulp character who was created nearly a decade before Scarlet due to his extremely popular radio series. The Shadow has been referred to as the "invisible avenger" who possessed "the mysterious power to cloud men's minds, so they could not see him." Exactly how much the character influenced the creation of Scarlet is hard to say, but it was nice to find this nod among the early strips.

She did manage to evade the murderer, but she could not avoid the fate of being bumped from her own strip. Fear not! It's Invisible Woman vs Iron Man! Whose side are you on? This week's panel from October 6, 1943 features Scarlet battling "Two Ton Tin". The robot was created by Wilbur Wilt, who was attempting to create the perfect "iron man," but accidently brought to life a woman-hating metal monster.

Panel of the Week - Sweet Ambrose

This week's panel is from a 1945 Sunday strip featuring Ambrose, a deranged killer who murders his wife and buries her near the home of her mute grandmother. Never was Stamm's style so creepy and nightmarish! This storyline is one of the most brutal we've found and the idea of running it today in the Sunday funny pages is impossible.

In Memoriam Dave Stevens 1955 - 2008

This week we were sad to learn of the passing of artist/creator Dave Stevens.

Dave was an incredible talent, probably best known as the creator of The Rocketeer and his glamour girl art. There aren't too many others I could name that could draw 'em prettier! We are sad that we no longer have the opportunity to see a Dave Stevens version of our Invisible Scarlet O'Neil, but after reading various accounts online, we are even sadder to hear that the industry has lost a good soul.

We understand that Stevens’ mother has requested that in lieu of flowers, people make donations to the Hairy Cell Leukemia Research Foundation

Panel of the Week - Hip Hip Hooray!

During the fifteen year run of the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil, there wasn't a large number of recurring villains. However, there was one that was particularly large. "Hippy the Hurricane", a former wrestler gone bad. In this February 15, 1943 panel, Hippy confronts our heroine after escaping the stir. This frame clearly demonstrates the importance of not being seen.

We begin this feature with one of my favorites of early Stamm's work. Originally published on June 6, 1940, this panel of Scarlet looking outside her apartment in Chicago is a prime example of the incredible detail Russell Stamm put into his early strips. You can definitely see the influence working with Chester Gould had on his work. This panel also shows our heroine ready to take action when someone is in need.

A Message from Russell Stamm Jr.

When my father, Russell A. Stamm, Sr., was a little boy he had dreams of becoming a syndicated cartoonist. He was constantly doodling cartoon characters on every piece of paper that he came across. He had a true talent for a unique and creative approach to his characters, themes, and drawings.

In 1935, when he went to work as an assistant for Chester Gould drawing Dick Tracy, his boyhood dream started to become a reality.

By the time I was born in 1946 my father was a well known syndicated cartoonist and his feature character, Scarlet O’Neil, was already six years old. I was fortunate to watch my father at work while I was growing up, and see the dedication, energy, and love he had for his career.

It is in his honor that I present Scarlet O’Neil as she was then, and what she will be from this day forward. I hope you will enjoy seeing a great deal of his original art and my interpretation of what Scarlet is today.

Created by Russell Stamm in 1940, Scarlet is an adventure-loving private detective, who besides possessing both brains and beauty, has the ability to cloak herself in invisibility whenever she desires. Scarlet graced the funny pages of the Chicago Daily Sun-Times and other syndicate newspapers for 15 years and appeared in numerous books and comics, but nearly vanished for good in the mid '50's. Though she has not been published, she has not been forgotten. After over 50 years of being unseen, Russell Stamm Jr. feels it is time to make Scarlet visible once again!
